Pumpkin Choice

Decades of experience with edible winter Squash, from seed to cut product.

Recently, the Terp Squashpackers started processing our organic pumpkins at the source. De Terp has specialized in the cultivation of different varieties of winter squash for decades and all these years the organic company has been located in the river area of the Netherlands.

The company supplies various retailers in the EU throughout the year. By 2024/2025, a total of 550 acres will be grown in the northern and southern hemispheres under contract.

Because quality and taste are paramount, a limited number of pumpkin varieties with high Brix value and high dry matter content were chosen, as these varieties are ideal for various preparations in cooking. Thus, these are not varieties for mass production (50 tons/ha.), but rather varieties with moderate yields of 20 tons/ha. There is always a negative relationship between quality and high kilo yield, as everyone knows, and this is especially true for pumpkins. We are not talking about pumpkin, but “squash,” edible fruit with thick flesh, nutty and relatively sweet in taste, according to Jeroen Robbers, owner and founder of De Terp Squashpackers BV.

The somewhat firmer varieties also deliver higher quality and are therefore naturally ideal for our new slicing and packaging line. We see that the carved pumpkin product is an added value pumpkin because it cannot be easily carved by hand by the normal consumer.
Until now, this was a disadvantage, but with our own cutting and packaging line for the refrigeration department of the supermarket (convenience products) we hope this will be an opportunity to develop a new market.
Therefore, we focus on quality, the right varieties, the right growing areas and year-round availability of sufficient quantities.

The cutting plant’s processing line can process 1,500 bags per hour, which is enough for several retailers. The bags are packed high care without additives and have a shelf life of more than eight days.
We see it as our duty to work organically, energy-neutral and carbon-neutral. Our packaging for the pumpkin cubes is therefore compostable, plastic-free and biobased.

Our cubes are certified organic, Demeter-*, QS-*, GlobalGap-, IFS-.
